Week 3 Game of the Week: Western Kentucky Hilltoppers

Mobile, Alabama is steeped in tradition, brimming with great food and music born from the north coast of the Caribbean. This city has a very similar feel to New Orleans. The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl game of the week goes to the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky as they travel to Mobile to face the South Alabama Jaguars. All of that tasty food and fine music take a back seat as the 1-1 Hilltoppers come to continue the momentum they found in week one when they upset the University of Kentucky Wildcats. During week two, the Hilltoppers’ offense threatened the overwhelmingly favored University of Tennessee, but the win was out of reach.

This is an all-Sun Belt Conference showdown, as South Alabama is looking for a win against a tougher Western Kentucky. The Jaguars are returning from New Orleans after beating Tulane and are the underdogs this week against the Hilltoppers.  The Jaguar’s QB Ross Metheny claimed 4 touchdowns in less than sixteen minutes to become the SunBelt Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week. A man of many talents, Methany threw for two scores, 365 yards on the day, and ran the ball to score on 35 and 14 yard sprints. If Methany can keep up that play, the Jaguars could be headed back to New Orleans in December.

This will be the last time these teams meet as interconference rivals. Western Kentucky will be moving over to become part of Conference USA in 2014. They have their eye on post season play under the leadership of former SEC Coach Bobby Petrino in his first year at WKU. This is a school that is looking to make a big impact in college football over the next few years, and it looks like they are making all of the right moves to accomplish it.
