It was the experienced Defense that led the way for victory Thursday night. Monroe posted their first win over Wake Forest at home 17-10.
Monroe holds off Wake Forest
Monroe’s Defense held Wake Forest to only their only 10 points in the first half. Monroe’s returning line proved too difficult for the young Wake Forest O. ULM kept the pressure on throughout the game. The Warhawks marked up seven sacks for 55 yards and kept the Demon Deacons to negative yards rushing. The line kept Wake Forest from running too far as well. Wake Forest didn’t break 100 yards rushing in their visit to Northern Louisiana. Monroe’s D picked up their first touchdown of the season with a pick six in the 3rd quarter. Mitch Lane grabbed that interception and TD along with 6 tackles Thursday night.
Offensive Scoring
The only touchdown from offense came late in the 4th quarter. Monroe’s Pete Thomas is quick on his feet and he proved it with a 9 yard scramble up the middle for his first TD as a WarHawk. Wake Forest had their only touchdown on a 25 yard returned blocked punt in the second quarter.
Around the Sun Belt
The Sun Belt grabbed 6 wins in 9 outings in week 1. Georgia Southern, Troy and Appalachian state all took a loss while Idaho and South Alabama start their schedule this week. Last year’s #RLBowl champion UL-Lafayette hosted Baton Rouge’s Southern University and dispatched them handedly in their home opener. QB Terrance Broadway connected for 3 TDs and handed over 2 interceptions.
